Deliverable 4.1.1. Gendering Decision Making and Communications Processes

Recommendations to more transparency in decision making processes to the advantage of gender equality

FESTA has published a report on gendered decision making and communications in organisations, which shows how power works and the arenas of power in organisations. The title is: Gendering Decision Making and Communications Processes.

The report is relevant for everyone working in organisations concerned with gender. It is interesting because it shows the ways that organisation practices in relation to decision making and communications conceal the operation of power and contribute to gender inequality.

It can be used to raise awareness of gender in organisations and the recommendations can be implemented to facilitate more transparency and accountability in decision making and communications processes and to advance gender equality.

The recommendations of the report address structural and cultural issues in the organization and also empower women to participate fully in organizational decision making, for example :

  • making the gender situation visible by publishing gender disaggregated data
  • establishing an independent equality committee with top level support
  • training decision makers in gender awareness
  • encouraging women’s participation in management positions
